A Wet and Wild Week!

The intense rainfall and flooding this week has left many homeowners wondering how to manage the rising waters. This much rainfall in Portland is very unusual. In fact, the rain storm on Monday dumped a record-setting 3.32 inches of rain in only 24 hours!

Fortunately, fire crews and city services were prepared and ready to help. Sand and bags were available at the Lake Oswego Skate Park and in many other locations around Portland. Roads were closed for safety and water pumped out of flooded areas. In addition, officials warned drivers to use extreme caution on the roads and avoid flooded areas. Cars can easily be disabled in just a few inches of water.

With over 7 inches of rain just this week, weather forecasters don’t expect a sunbreak until possibly Monday or Tuesday. In the meantime, what can you do to protect your home from the rainstorms?  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Clear leaves and other debris from storm drains near your property — but do not attempt to remove a storm drain cover or attempt to clean a drain located in a busy street. To report flooding or other storm-related issues, call your city’s public works/maintenance department.
  • Clear your gutters of leaves and debris. Clogged gutters cause rainwater to pool, and if you've got an older roof, that rain will find its way into your house. Check the down pipes as well. Make sure the output has somewhere to go, to avoid pools near your foundation.
  • Keep large trees around your home trimmed and inspect for dead and dying branches that could come down in a storm.
  • If flooding can’t be avoided, move furniture, rugs, electronics and other belongings to upper floors (or at least raise them off a ground floor), shut off electricity at the breaker panel, and elevate major appliances onto concrete blocks.
  • If your basement was flooded because of the massive amount of rainfall in a short amount of time, the first thing to do is dry it out using a sump pump. After the water is pumped out, open the basement windows to increase air circulation and decrease the possibility of mold. Add fans and increase the ventilation as much as possible before mold spreads.

Move over, summer—a new school year is coming!

With the start of school, families face new organizational challenges. Early-morning alarm clocks ring. Paper piles swell as hand-outs and homework stream into the house. Shorter autumn days bring a hectic round of sports activities and events, and calendars fill to the brim. Get organized now for the best school year ever! Use these ideas to prepare your home and family for the busy days ahead.

Ease the family into a school year schedule.
The first day of school is no time for a huge adjustment of household sleep schedules. Instead, ease children back into a school year routine gradually. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, closer to the hour they’ll need to rise when school begins. Plan easy, healthy breakfasts and lunches ahead of tiem to make the mornings go smoother and pick clothing the night before.

Keep up learning activities.
While it’s best to have learning activities throughout the summer, if you’ve fallen off, now is a good time to reintroduce them. Have your child read for at least 20 minutes a day, play math games and review math facts. Set up a designated homework station where the kids can sit down and focus to get it all done.

Gather supplies for organizing homework/paperwork.
For younger kids, shopping for a new backpack and filling it with school supplies builds excitement for the first day. Consider also purchasing a school supplies caddy filled with extra supplies, so if they run out at school you will always have more at home. Drawers for homework are a plus. For older kids, buy a notebook with dividers for each subject to organize homework, notes, handouts, quizzes/tests, and assignments. Use an accordion file to keep completed assignments at home.

Make a family calendar.
Nothing calms school year chaos like a central family calendar. Whether you use a paper calendar on the fridge or sync your tablets on a digital calendar, you’ll need a centralized place to track after-school activities, school programs and volunteer work. Be sure to add school lunch menus, important due dates, sports practice schedules or field trip days to keep everyone on track.

Starting the school year organized both at home and at school, will help the whole family to feel more prepared for fall. Happy New School Year!

The White House - Priceless!

Celebrating Independence Day at the White House

Welcome to this grand mansion in the neo-classical Federal style, with details that echo classical Greek Ionic architecture! The White House was designed by Irish architect, James Hoban, in 1792. His original design was modeled after the Leinster House in Dublin, Ireland and did not include the north and south porticos. After 8 years of construction, John and Abigail Adams moved into the President’s House on November 1, 1800 and lived on the second floor as the first floor housed the servants. During Monroe’s administration, the South Portico was constructed in 1824, and Andrew Jackson oversaw the addition of the North Portico in 1829.

Every president since John Adams has occupied the White House. Today, the White House has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and 6 levels! There are also 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators. The president’s offices, also known as the West Wing, includes a unique Oval Office and an underground, state-of-the-art Situation Room. Perfect for working from home!

The spacious and private grounds provide a buffer from onlookers and feature the lush Kennedy Garden and beautiful Rose Garden. There is also a tennis court, basketball court, putting green, and White House kitchen garden, which includes over 50 kinds of vegetables, as well as berries, herbs, and a beehive!

The Ground Floor Corridor rooms are now transformed from their early use as service areas, and the State Floor rooms have entertained countless leaders and dignitaries. The White House is truly both the home of the President of the United States his family, and a museum of American history.  From the Grand Staircase to the Oval office, this exceptional home is truly a 10!

Close-in SW Estate on Nearly One Acre with Gated Entry!

This home has a unique combination of charm, elegance and grace coupled with an exquisite private setting with a total of six car garage and room for utility trucks, boats and storage galore! All of the charm awaits you as you drive through the gated entry onto the private grounds of this Estate of yesteryear. Tall, mature laurel hedges border these gracious grounds. Classic in it’s day, this home sits on a .92 acre lot tucked up off Stephenson in a serene, peaceful setting. The four bedroom, two and a half bath home is surrounded by a beautiful lawn with generous gardening space and mature fruit trees. Roll up your sleeves! Much has been updated and now is the time to choose personal touches to make it your own! Lattice windows, original hardwood floors, exposed brick, pocket doors, built-ins throughout, and two wood burning fireplaces add to the classic charm. The stainless steel appliances, slate tile floor, slab granite, oak cabinets, recessed lighting, skylight and personal hot tub room off the master create a modern touch. A covered pass through leads to the finished 3 car garage with painted floors and high ceilings. A second detached 3 car garage is perfect for a workshop or car enthusiast. A quaint greenhouse and a child’s play house make this estate feels like home!
