‘Tis the season for turkey and traditions. What makes holidays like Thanksgiving so memorable? Long after the food is gone, the memories that families cling to are the special traditions you share together. If you’re looking for some new traditions to begin, try one of these this year.
Go together as a family to serve those less fortunately in your community. After your shift is over, take some time to sit and talk with a few of the people you have served. You are likely to hear some incredible stories. Check with the Portland Rescue Mission or Oregon Food Bank to see how you can help.
2. DISPLAY A THANKFUL TREE IN YOUR HOME
Set up your Thankful Tree just for November or keep it up all year round! Cut out paper leaves to add to your tree each day. On Thanksgiving, provide each guest with a leaf and a pen to write down what he or she is thankful for and then read the leaves aloud as they are taped or pinned to the tree. Read more about how to create a Thankful Tree for your home!
3. CONTRIBUTE TO SOMEONE ELSE'S THANKSGIVING DINNER
There are many low-income families who can't afford an entire Thanksgiving dinner. Ask your friends, family and neighbors, whether they know about any struggling families who you could help. Then, take your whole family shopping for food, festive decorations, or table settings. Try to involve other families and friends to share the cost or to adopt more families in need. Go together to deliver the food to your chosen families the day before Thanksgiving.
Paint a couple of faux pumpkins white and write on them with a black sharpie the things you are thankful for. Ask everyone at your gathering to add to the thankful pumpkins and then decorate your dinner table with these pumpkins. For your guests, give them small pumpkins of their own to take home for their families to do the same thing. Find out more about how to create Thankful Pumpkins for your holiday gathering.
5. WALK OR RUN IN A TURKEY TROT ON THANKSGIVING
Work off your Thanksgiving dinner ahead of time by taking your whole family to a Thanksgiving Day walk or run! Check out Sherwood's Give n' Gobble the The Turkey Trot at the Oregon Zoo. You might even want to dress up in fun Thanksgiving related costumes! If a crowded run isn't your thing, try finding a nice hike nearby to enjoy the fall foliage together before dinner.

|208 Durham Street in Old Town Lake Oswego|
Interested in solar panels, backyard habitats, energy efficient heating systems, or on-demand water heaters? Learn about all this and more at the 2016 Green Home Tour in Lake Oswego's Old Town and Uplands areas on Saturday, October 29th. This tour is presented by the Lake Oswego Sustainability Network (LOSN) and the Lake Oswego Sustainability Advisory Board.
2016 Green Home Tour Schedule:
OLD TOWN AREA
1. Heritage Tree and home deconstruction. 208 Durham Street (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM) Photo above. This small house could have been a “tear down” but instead of smashing it to smithereens and sending the debris to a landfi ll, Bob and Corinna contracted with the Portland Rebuilding Center to deconstruct it, board by board. They created an inventory of the rescued and donated materials, and received a tax deduction. Their lovely reconstructed home also features A “Gold-rated” Certified Backyard Habitat, cork fl oors, on-demand water heater, a Heritage Tree, and an electric-assist bicycle in the garage.
2. Adaptive Reuse and resource conservation. 111 Ladd St. (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM)
In 2014, Jon and Michael purchased a dilapidated duplex that was destined for demolition. Rather than tear-down the duplex in order to build their new home, the couple reconfigured the structure into a single-family residence. The home includes materials sourced from the Portland Rebuilding Center and features LED lighting, energy-star appliances, an energy efficient heating system, dual-flush toilets and an electric vehicle charging station for their BMW i3. Their yard is also “Gold-rated” and certafied.
3. Solar panel charging LEAF and TESLA electric vehicles. 1960 Egan Way (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM) Tom built his mountain-view home in 1992, with an orientation toward passive solar. He carved into the hill to create a layered vegetable and flower garden. When Lisa moved in after their wedding in 2009, they bought two electric vehicles: a LEAF and a TESLA. Solar panels provide around 90% of the electric energy for their home and cars. They enjoy monitoring their solar production online and comparing it to their use.
4. Expert composting reduced energy costs and one of Lake Oswego's best views!
2090 Crest Dr. (3:00 PM - 4:00 PM) In 1987 Janet inherited a lovely mid century modern home with a breathtaking view overlooking the lake and Mt. Hood. Janet has spent 30 years lightening the heavy footprint of this non-insulated house. She maintains a large yard and vegetable garden and she changed all her bulbs to LED’s. She became an expert on home composting and water efficiency and leases an all-electric Chevy.
Special Feature! Relax at 3pm here as your last tour destination for refreshments on the deck followed by a one time composting demo in Janet's two compost piles and how to use kitchen scrap compost on the vegetable beds.
